Description

Steam Boat Engines (10 items).

1138. Margate No. 5, Dart (UX & UY). Dec. 1824, Jan. 1825, Nov. 1826, Nov. 1829, Apr., Sep. 1830. 10 items.
Two 50 horse power side lever boat engines, with 39½ inch cylinders, 3½ foot strokes. Power increased to 60 horses 1830.

Also the following later items: "Scheme for Engines in a Vessel same as Margate Dart" - sketch cross-section of a boat by William Creighton, Nov. 1826; section and plan of boiler - reverse drawing made in the London office, Nov. 1829; new 43½ inch cylinders - coloured reverse drawing, Apr. 1830; sketch of alterations to eccentric rod, Sep. 1830 (also refers to eccentric rods of Wizard, Escape and Dragon). Some of these drawings bear letter codes.

For the United Margate Steam Packet Co. According to Boat Engine Book No. 1, the engines were ordered by the Dart Steam Boat Co., but correspondence in the firm's letter books makes it clear that the boat was operated by the United Margate Steam Packet Co. The firm was later referred to as the Margate Steam Packet Co.
