1138. Margate No. 5, Dart (UX & UY). Dec. 1824, Jan. 1825, Nov. 1826, Nov. 1829, Apr., Sep. 1830. 10 items.
Two 50 horse power side lever boat engines, with 39½ inch cylinders, 3½ foot strokes. Power increased to 60 horses 1830.Cross-section of the boat and engines (coloured), plan of the engines and beams etc., side view of engine and paddle wheel and boiler (coloured), cross-section of the boat showing the boiler; section and plan of boiler - partially coloured reverse drawing marked "GB Boiler for two Engines 40h as altered"; paddle wheels - partially shaded drawing.
Also the following later items: "Scheme for Engines in a Vessel same as Margate Dart" - sketch cross-section of a boat by William Creighton, Nov. 1826; section and plan of boiler - reverse drawing made in the London office, Nov. 1829; new 43½ inch cylinders - coloured reverse drawing, Apr. 1830; sketch of alterations to eccentric rod, Sep. 1830 (also refers to eccentric rods of Wizard, Escape and Dragon). For the United Margate Steam Packet Co. According to Boat Engine Book No. 1, the engines were ordered by the Dart Steam Boat Co., but correspondence in the firm's letter books makes it clear that the boat was operated by the United Margate Steam Packet Co. The firm was later referred to as the Margate Steam Packet Co.
