-
Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)
-
The Ingilbys have lived at Ripley since the mid-fourteenth century, when Thomas de Ingleby, a justice of the King's Bench, married an heiress whose name is in doubt. At this period, the bulk of their estates seem to have been in the North Riding but in the reign of Elizabeth Sir William Ingilby sold a good deal of property and thereafter the family acquired the West Riding estates which are mainly documented in the family records. The first baronetcy was created in 1642.
Descent seems to have been from father to son until 1618 when Sir William Ingilby died without issue and was succeeded by his nephew William, son of his brother Sampson. Sir John Ingilby who died in 1772 was succeeded by his illegitimate son John, who was created baronet in 1781. He married Elizabeth Amcotts, bringing the Lincolnshire estates into the family. Their son, Sir William Amcotts Ingilby, also died without issue and the estates passed to his cousin Rev. Henry John Ingilby, created baronet in 1866.
-
Publication note(s) (A note of publications related to the record)
-
W.T. Lancaster used some of the earlier documents for his 'Early History of Ripley and the Ingilby Family' (John Whitehead and Son, 1918) which traces the family history to the early seventeenth century and also deals with the Roos family of North Deighton. Later, Mrs. Blanche Tempest worked intensively through many of the medieval charters and later deeds and her notes remain with the records (No. 3840).
