Administrative / biographical background

The Society was formed on 22nd February 1909 as the Bury Athenaeum Musical Society, with a committee jointly composed of directors of the Bury Athenaeum and members of an existing choral society. In 1939, it ceased meeting at the Athenaeum, and the name was therefore changed to Bury Music Circle; in 1972, there was a further change of name to Bury Choral Society.
