Many volumes have been foliated or paginated more than once, but it is advisable always to follow the pencil foliation when using a book in the collection; it has been the rule in compiling this Catalogue to use what is believed to be the most recent foliation. A higher folio or page number preceding a lower (e.g. ff. 10-3, pp. 312-260) indicates that the volume has been used from both ends.

It should be emphasized that the printed catalogue marks under which any records are described are those which should be quoted; the earlier (and often confusing) catalogue marks, if they are found on documents, should be ignored. Seals and types of binding have only been noted if they are of special interest.

Arrangement

Due to the previous sortings to which the records have been subjected, to the fact that they came in at intervals of time, and that they received numbers which have been quoted in print, the problems in preparing this list have been increased. In brief, however, documents have only been transferred from one class to another where earlier mis-sorting made this unavoidable.

Those documents transferred to the Diocesan Record Office by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners have been merged, where possible, with existing classes and the remainder listed in a separate section.

Custodial history

The action of the Dean and Chapter of Chichester in depositing its archives in the Diocesan Record Office followed the establishment of that Office by the Bishop of Chichester on 21 July 1949; the agreement between the Dean and Chapter and the West Sussex County Council is dated 8 June 1951. Since then, there have been various accessions of records which form this collection.

There are some large and unfortunate gaps in the records; these may be due to the outrages against the Cathedral during the Civil War, to the neglect of generations of registrars, or to the wanton destruction of "old papers".

Publication note(s)

The Dunkin Collection in the British Museum (Add. MSS. 39326-39546) comprises 221 volumes compiled by E. H. W. Dunkin from many sources, including the episcopal and capitular archives at Chichester. They relate mainly to Sussex clergy and families. Please refer to the British Museum Catalogue of Additions to the Manuscripts 1916-1920 (1933), pp. 32-40 (a copy of which is in the West Sussex Record Office Library) for more details.
