St. Paul's Hospital was built as the workhouse for Cheltenham Poor Law Union in 1840. It was reconstructed and enlarged to hold 534 inmates in 1887. New 'casual wards' were built in 1883-1884. The buildings were transferred to the Cheltenham Hospital Management Committee in 1948 after a period as a public Assistance Institution, and further alterations have been made since then. Some parts of the original buildings have been demolished, although others are still in use as the present St. Pauls' Hospital (1982)
