Custodial history (Describes where and how the record has been held from creation to transfer to The National Archives)

Mr. Moule numbered the records, sometimes singly and sometimes by bundles. The list is at the beginning of the volume. The documents have been deposited in the care of the County Record Office, and are listed here, in a completely changed order. The Record Office copy of the printed catalogue has been marked to show the relationship of old and new numbers, and the old numbers appear in brackets at the end of each item in this typed catalogue. Not all the items described in Mayo's catalogue have been found, and conversely many others (particularly additional records of Quarter Sessions) have come to light and been included, along with others dating from 1800 to 1900, which were outside Mayo's chosen field.

Unpublished finding aids (A note of unpublished indexes, lists or guides to the record)
-
It is hoped that searchers will use the two catalogues in conjunction. The excellent index to Mayo's volume available at Dorset Record Office will provide reference to many persons, places and subjects, whilst this one gives a more complete and ordered list of the documents available.

Publication note(s) (A note of publications related to the record)
-
In 1886 a catalogue of Dorchester charters, minute books and other documents of dates earlier than A.D. 1800 was drawn up by Mr. J.G. Moule, and this was revised and enlarged by Canon C.H. Mayo. In 1908 a limited edition was printed by private subscription through the efforts of Mr. A.W. Gould and Canon Mayo, entitled "The Municipal Records of the Borough of Dorchester" (Exeter). It contains transcripts of charters, a calendar of the contents of Dorchester "Domesday" Book (a cartulary) and sections giving extracts from documents under many headings, illustrating the corporate, religious and social life of Dorchester. There is also a useful Introduction, describing the topography of Dorchester as shown in the documents.
