Miss Gafan was born in Bolton to parents who had emigrated to England from Eastern Europe as young children. She came to Manchester in her teens in order to mix with the larger Jewish community. She became the secretary of the Manchester Jewish Literary Society and helped Margaret Leingdon at the Delamere Home. She became secretary to the Jewish Refugees Committee just before the war and in 1945 went to Landsberg, Germany to work for the American Joint Distribution Committee in a Displaced Persons Camp, returning in 1946 to England.
