Description (What the record is about)
-
'The right and title of Sir Thomas Fane of Kente, knight, to the name, stile, and dignitie of Lord of Bergavennye in the right of dame Marie his wiefe, daughter and sole heire of Henrie [Nevill], late Lord of Bergavenny, deceased [1587]', with examples of baronies inherited through the female line. The author is probably Robert Glover, Somerset herald (1544-88).
The following documents have been inserted:
'Examples to prove Ed: Nevill's title to the Barony of Abergavenny' (ff.52-8).
'The Petition and Genealogie of Mary Nevill, Lady Fane, for the Barony of Abergavenny' (ff.60-1).
Brief genealogies of some peerages inherited through the female line. They include George Carew, Baron Carew of Clopton, 1609 (ff.62-3).
Miscellaneous historical and legal notes (ff.118-23) concerning various titles of honour (ff.64-9).
Parchment covers endorsed 'The true copy of Mr. Glover, as Somerset booke touchinge the barony of Bergaveny'. The inclusion of a note on the barony of Clopton suggests that the manuscript came into the possession of George Carew,Earl of Totnes.
iii + 107 ff. (ff.70-107 blank).
