Description

Family muniments of the Bagshawes of the Oakes-in-Norton near Sheffield and related families of Gill, Torr, Drake and others. The estates are at Norton (until 20th century in the county of Derby), in the High Peak and the Craven district of Yorkshire. (Deposited 1960 and 1964). Records including:

Manor: Barnoldswick, Yorkshire, court roll 1723-1771.

Parish: Assessments for Barnoldswick, Yorkshire 1750-1770, Brimington 1709-1793, Bradwell 1781-1784, Coal Aston 1815, Norton 1817, all Derbyshire.

Norton Church: plans of pews, vaults, etc. 1660, 1776, 1819. Norton school: register of charity scholars 1759-1864, accounts 1822-1847; charity accounts 1724-1866.

Brimington tithe accounts 1679, 1748-1791.

Deeds: Castleton (including rectory), Bradwell, Hope (180), Chapel-en-le-Frith (20), Tideswell, Wormhill (including a forestership in Peak Forest) (180), Norton, Coal Aston, Greenhill, Brimington, Eckington, Totley smelting mills (225), Chesterfield and Ashover (10), Derbyshire, Barnoldswick and Thornton in Craven (130), Northowram (8), Kelfield (2), Bradfield, Gleadless, Greasborough, Sheffield, Ecclesall (Moscar wheel) (35), Yorkshire, Foulridge, Burnley, Great Marsden, Lancashire (10).

Many family wills and settlements (all estates). 14th-19th centuries, including many ancient.

Estate: Rentals for High Peak and Scarsdale estates (tenants but few particulars) 18th and early 19th centuries; Brimington 1766-1775; Barnoldswick 1815-1831.

Surveys and valuations, miscellaneous 18th and early 19th centuries; Brimington 1684.

Woods: valuations and sales, including sales to forgemasters 1729-1808. Cash-books, ledgers, corn account book, wages books, mid-18th century.

Plans: High Peak commons: Wormhill, Bowden chapel, Greenfairfield, etc. 1675 and c1700 (probably 18th century copies); Wormhill chapel lands, 18th century; Bradwell (with a survey) 1807, estate plans for the Oakes, Whittington, Brimington, Wormhill, Great Hucklow, Dronfield, Norton, Dore, Derbyshire, various dates from 1707; Carlton near Hull, 1747 Barnoldswick, Thornton, Earby, 1808 Yorkshire.

Lead mines: Hucklow Edge and Eyam Edge mines, Derbyshire (10); Grassington mines, Yorkshire 1750-1781 (7). North Derbyshire turnpike improvements, various.

Norton church: plans of pews and Blythe chantry 1869.

Leadmining: Reckoning books Odin mine 1704-1764, Gould Rake and Eyam Edge and accounts for all Bagshawe's mines 18th century to 1815; leases of lot and cope 1806-1827; Grassington mines notes and legal papers; deeds including Whale sough.

Public Office: Papers of Richard Bagshaw 1720-1721, and Sir W.C. Bagshawe 1805-1806, as Sheriffs of Derbyshire; appointment of William Bagshawe as Clerk of the Spicery, 1745, and Spicery Office accounts 1733, 1755-1760. Appointment of Richard Bagshawe as Gentleman Usher of the Privy Chamber 1760-1761 and accounts of office 1768-1769.

Correspondence: Family, estate, personal and some public, including Derbyshire elections and politics 1701 (poll book), 1767-1837, 1878, Yorkshire elections 1741-1784, Hull election 1774; business re lead mining, turnpike roads, Brimington ironstone mines, game preserving, 1730s-1833.

Personal: Cash-books, including series with daily entries 1763-1769, 1818-1849; executors' papers 1685-1854; pocket almanacs with personal entries 1644, 1735, 1831-1834, 1846, 1850.
