Description (What the record is about)
-
The MSS. deposited by Mr. R.A. Craven Smith Milnes of Hockerton Manor on 21st January 1959 contain a closely connected group of papers from Burnell of Winkburn, Steade of Beauchief Abbey, Derbyshire and Smith of Dunston Hall, Derbyshire, families. These were connected by marriage, various members assuming the name of Burnell and living at Winkburn. Mr. Craven Smith Milnes is the direct heir of these families, though the Hall was sold in 1934.
There are very few deeds of title; copies only of Winkburn and a few mediaeval charters only from Beauchief. There is, however, a large quantity of late 18th and 19th century correspondence, with some interesting diaries, a lot of household and estate papers. The military members of the family kept all their papers and the letters from the Duke of Connaught to Colonel Burnell; the Crimean diaries and the journals of the Reverend Charles Craven to India and China, 1825, etc. have been retained by Mr. Craven Smith Milnes.
