Administrative / biographical background

Macclesfield West Park Hospital was built as the Macclesfield Poor Law Union Workhouse and Infirmary: the former was erected in 1842-4, and the latter in 1881. There were also separate fever and isolation blocks on the site. When the Boards of Guardians were abolished by the Local Government Act 1929, the premises passed to the control of the County Council's Public Assistance Committee, and were designated West Park Public Assistance Institution. In June 1940 it was appropriated for hospital purposes and became West Park County General Hospital with 375 beds, and was transferred to the control of the County's Public Health Committee. The hospital became part of the National Health Service in 1948, under the Macclesfield and District (later East Cheshire) no 19 Group Hospital Management Committee of the Manchester Regional Hospital Board. In 1974 it was transferred to Cheshire Area Health Authority, and in 1982 to Macclesfield District Health Authority. It is now designated the West Park Branch of Macclesfield District General Hospital.
