Administrative / biographical background

A new centralised form of organistion for the management of the city's five teaching hospitals (Manchester Royal Infirmary (incl. Barnes Hospital and the Private Patients Home), St. Mary's, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Manchester Foot Hospital and the Dental Hospital of Manchester) was set-up following the nationalisation of the Health Service in 1948, by the establishment of the United Manchester Hospitals.

The stated responsibilities of the Board of Governors were two-fold. Firstly, it was to ensure that the quality of health-care offered to patients was of the highest standard and that facilities for a flow of first-class doctors were provided.

A Management Committee was designated to each hospital in the union, a Staff Appointments Committee reviewed the selection of medical staff, and the Works and Maintenance Committee was responsible for the organisation of maintenance work in the hospitals. Other Committees grew out of the Board as the need arose.

The United Manchester Hospitals existed as a governing body until the re-organisation of the National Health Service in 1974, when part of its responsibilities were taken over the Manchester Area Health Authority (Teaching)
