Administrative / biographical background

The Building & Monumental Workers' Association of Scotland (BMWAS) was formed in 1920 from the United Operative Masons' Association of Scotland (q.v.), the United Operative Masons' & Granite Workers' Union (q.v.), the Scottish Amalgamated Society of Mosaic & Encaustic Tile Fixers, Marble Workers, & Fireplace Builders (or the Scottish Amalgamated Society of Tile Fixers, Marble Workers ...), and the Associated Paviours' Federal Union. The union amalgamated with the AUBTW in 1942.
