Casualty Form: 13/1/1916 seconded for duty with 9 Bde MG Coy. 1/4/1916 reported msg believed killed 27/3/1916, death assumed 5/12/1916.
Statement of 20636 Pte Basil Saunders 9 MG Coy of 49 Fielding Rd, Bedford Park, Chiswick: "on 27/3/1916 at St Eloi - saw officer go out to get a wounded RE and never returned. Informant saw him go over the crater with this object and was told by one of the gunners (name forgotten) that the latter saw Lt Impey throw up his hands and fall down with a thud as though hit by a bullet in some vital part. Lt Impey was informant's MG officer and all the men were very sorry to lose him. Efforts were made to get to him but it was impossible to do so….."
Statement by 17341 L/Cpl Beazard 9 MGC, of 30 Sherwood Drive, Shirebrook, Derby "on 27 March at St Eloi, Lt Impey was shot through the head during a charge. His body lay on the edge of a crater all day. At night the crater was heavily shelled and when a search was made for the body later, it could not be found. Informant believes it was blown to pieces.
