Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume Q5 is the fifth in the series of seven 'Q' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Lincoln, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Smith & Watkins. The preferments in this volume concern the Lincoln Chapter Estates, which were transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 25 March 1869 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 8 February 1870 by Order in Council.; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports. ; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the Lincoln Capitular Estates were probably re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation (date unknown), as some of these estates were subsequently transferred back to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as Chapter Late Permanent Estates on 24 June 1935 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette by Order in Council on 14 June 1935.; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical area covered within the volume includes: the county of Lincolnshire, parishes of Lincoln St. Swithin, Lincoln St. Margaret, Lincoln St. John in Newport, Lincoln St. Peter in Eastgate, Lincoln St. Paul, Lincoln St. Mary Magdalene [Magdalen], Lincoln St. Michael, Lincoln St. Nicholas, Lincoln St. Martin, Lincoln St. Peter at Arches, Lincoln St. Botolphs, Lincoln St. Mary le Wigford, Lincoln St. Peter at Gowts and Lincoln St. Benedict.
