Administrative / biographical background

Winston worked on a series of Lowestoft registered fishing vessels between 1933 and 1938. Between 1940 and 1943 he served with the London Fire Brigade. He then had three years on the Royal Navy Minesweeper HMS Lynx in the Mediterranean, from 1943 to 1946. Following his demob he went back to work for the London Fire Brigade from 1947 to 1961, and from 1962 to 1973 he was the caretaker at Alibon School, Dagenham, Essex. He died at West Ham on 26 December 1973.
