Excerpt from a BBC radio programme broadcast in November 1963 (presumably The Jazz Scene on the Light Programme, 17 Nov) in which Paul Oliver discusses the recent sixtieth birthday of Big Joe Williams and the American Folk Blues Festival tour dates in Croydon, with clips of live recordings of Williams, Memphis Slim & Willie Dixon (with Matt “Guitar” Murphy), Sonny Boy Williamson II, Lonnie Johnson, and Muddy Waters. Oliver complains that Williams is the only performer on the bill to whom the label ‘folk’ could accurately apply.
