United Kingdom: England, southeast coast: Kent, Essex and Suffolk: Broadstairs and North Foreland to Orford Ness, including and inset of the 'Outer Gabbard' [sand bank]. 'A Survey of the Entrances or Channels into the River Thames'. Chart shows coastline, hydrography anchorages, buoys, preferred navigable channels, topography, vegetation, settlements, buildings, fortifications (including Languard Fort), military installations, land marks (including the location of a horizontal mill, Margate), sight lines and remarks. Printed. Watermark: 'J Whatman' [obscured by linen backing]. Latitude and longitude indicated; north point with compass indicator and magnetic north variation, 1811; no scale shown. Surveyed 'by [Murdoch] Mackenzie [Junior], [Graeme] Spence and [George] Thomas'; Published according to Act of Parliament by Captain Thomas Hurd, Hydrographer to the Admiralty, Hydrographical Office, 7 March 1812; includes Hydrographic Office logo with anchor motif. Annotated: with pasted inset: 'Outer Gabbard' with soundings and evidence of (pencil) construction lines; (in purple crayon): 'Original'; (in red ink): 'Buoy checqd [chequered] black and white'; (in pencil): position and note for 'Galloper Light Vessel by Mr Thomas 9 July 1814'.
