The markets owned by the Corporation with the exception of the cattle market were common law markets. Bristol was a royal manor and in 1227 a lease of the fee farm of Bristol including the markets was granted to the Corporation by the Crown. The lease was renewed from time to time until 1462, when a grant of the fee farm was made "for ever". Few records of the markets have survived.
