Description (What the record is about)
-
The papers that are listed here come from the Labour Party International Department and its predecessor, the joint International Department of the Labour Party and the Trades Union Congress.
The papers consist either of printed or duplicated material sent to the Party by the Second International, the Labour and Socialist International or the International Socialist Bureau, or of correspondence between officers and members of those bodies and officers of the Labour Party. In large part, the papers are addressed to or written by William Gillies, who was the officer responsible for international affairs in the Labour Party.
Although the material here preserved mainly reflects on the relationship of the Labour Party and the International, some of it is of considerable importance for the history of the International itself, especially during the two World Wars when the International was centred on London and when the Labour Party played a central role in its post-war reconstruction.
