Description

Barry was born in Co. Roscommon on 12th March 1780 and served with the British army in the Peninsular Wars having joined as an assistant surgeon in 1806. His experiments on the return of blood were the culmination of the four years 1822-1826 spent studying physiology and medicine in Paris. These researches earned him a fellowship of the Royal Society. However, after 1826, he concentrated his interests in infectious diseases and public health. He was knighted after a trip to Russia to study cholera. He died of an aneurism on 4 November 1835.
