Administrative / biographical background

Cords Ltd/Pecket Well Mill

Pecket Well Mill in Keighley Rd, otherwise known as Pecket Well Shed was a cotton-weaving mill opened in 1858. It was rebuilt after a fire in 1873 and later traded as Cords Ltd. The business became a subsidiary of M Chapman and Sons (Textiles) Ltd, Stockport. Alan Greenwood was the Director of the Company when the records were deposited in 1995. This was the last fustian-weaving mill in Hebden Bridge when it closed in 1998. The mill, engine house, chimney and weaving shed date from 1840 to 1858 and are listed. In June 2003, there was a proposal to convert the building into flats

Central Dyeing Co Ltd, Hebble End, Hebden Bridge, dyers and finishers

This was an independent company until c1970 when R and J Pullman who also owned Greenwood Stell (where Alan Greenwood worked) bought it. It dealt principally with corduroys and needle cords. It was closed in 1981

Greenwood Stell and Sons, Mount Pleasant, Mytholmroyd, fustian manufacturers

Alan Greenwood was Managing Director of this Company, which closed in 1981
