Description (What the record is about)
-
Red half-leather bound album measuring 250x305mm, containing snapshots mostly mounted two to a page, with pencilled captions written beneath. Prints 130-134 are credited to Rawling. One of the clauses of the Anglo-Tibetan Treaty signed at Lhasa on 7 September 1904 was an agreement to open trade marts at Gyantse and Gartok, and in order to gather information about the latter, Younghusband sanctioned an expedition there, to be led by Cecil Godfrey Rawling. Bailey joined this expedition with the job of reporting 'on the trade and trade routes between India and Nari, Khorsum, the province of Tibet in which Gartok is situated.' See also Photo 430/56 for another series of photographs taken in the course of the journey and also Rawling's account, The Great Plateau (London: 1905).
