Administrative / biographical background

St Matthew's Church, Dendron, was built in 1642 at the expense of Robert Dickinson of Leece and London who, by his will of 1644, left £200 to trustees to be invested to pay a curate and schoolmaster

The building was used until 1833 as both chapel and school and was consecrated in 1774. It was rebuilt in 1795-6 at the expense of Thomas Greene of London, a former pupil. In 1833 the dividing wall between the church and the school was removed and a tower was added to the enlarged church, a new school being built opposite the churchyard gate. The present school at North Hill was built in 1864

The chapel became a parish church in 1892
