This indenture, written in English, is a settlement between William Cavendish, 1st Baron Cavendish of Hardwick, and Edward Lord Bruce concerning the particulars of a jointure for Christian Bruce following her marriage to William's son and future heir, William Cavendish, and levy a fine to Lord Bruce of Cavendish's estates.The lands mentioned are estates across Lancashire, Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, not including those of Sir Henry Pierpont.
The indenture is signed at the foot by William Cavendish, 1st Baron and endorsed by the witness signatures of John Tindall, Nicholas Lowe, Richard Pyell, Robert Redhill, John Parkinson, Nicholas Parker, Henry Travice and Sir Robert Griffiths. A contemporary hand has added a "no. 9" to the back of the parchment and a brief description of the document, now heavily faded.
