Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume S2 is the second in the series of four 'S' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of London, which were transferred to Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. The preferments in this volume concern the London Cathedral Estates, which includes the following: the London St. Paul's Minor Canons Estates (corporate) transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 25 March 1875 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 10 August 1875 by Order in Council; the London St. Paul's Minor Canons Estates (separate) transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 29 June 1875 under St. Paul's Cathedral London Minor Canonries Act 1875 (38 & 39 Vic. c. 1xxiv); the Brondesbury Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on on 9 June 1839 by vacancy; the Cantlowes Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on on 2 May 1875 by vacancy; the Chamberlayne Wood Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in March 1835 by vacancy; the Eald Street Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 19 January 1842 by vacancy; the Islington Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in October 1840 by vacancy; the Mapesbury Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 6 March 1851 by vacancy; the St. Pancras Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 21 January 1847 by vacancy; the Wenlock Barn Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 27 March 1845 by vacancy; the Willesden Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1848 by vacancy; and the Stoke Newington Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 3 December 1843 by vacancy. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports. ; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Middlesex, parishes of St. Pancras, Willesden, Islington, Shoreditch St. Leonard, Stoke Newington, London Old Street St. Luke, Hammersmith and Fulham; the county of Essex, parishes of Chigwell, Tillingham and Kirby le Soken; the county of Kent, parish of Throwley; the county of Sussex, parish of Lodsworth; the county of Middlesex and city of London, parish of Holborn St. Andrew; the city of London, parishes of St. Gregory and Pountney St. Laurence.
