Administrative / biographical background

The Victoria County History was founded at the end of the last century as a national historic survey, which would form a worthy and permanent memorial to the memory of Queen Victoria. The series was dedicated, with permission, to the Queen. Early volumes included descriptions of the geology, botany and zoology of the counties, but these were dropped in later volumes.
