The Council retained a number of unpublished manuscripts and proofs of contributions until 1965, when they were deposited at the Museum on indefinite loan. Conditions of the deposit are set out in archive file DF601/47.

The Victoria County History was founded at the end of the last century as a national historic survey, which would form a worthy and permanent memorial to the memory of Queen Victoria. The series was dedicated, with permission, to the Queen. Early volumes included descriptions of the geology, botany and zoology of the counties, but these were dropped in later volumes.
