Selection and destruction information

Before deposit at the Record Office the records were weeded by staff at the Crown Court following Departmental guidelines. Whilst all surviving records before 1850 were retained, thereafter only a sample of records was preserved.

Administrative / biographical background

The County Court was first established under the County Court Act 1846, as a civil court with jurisdiction over recovery of debts and civil actions up to certain financial limits, including bankruptcy.
