The manuscript volumes Ref. ZCX/1-5 are of uncertain provenance; most are believed to have been in the possession of the City Council since the nineteenth century.
The documents Ref. ZCX/6-32 were only originally in the series of city charters listed by Margaret Groombridge in Guide to the Charters, Plate and Insignia of the City of Chester, 1950. The series was subsequently divided into charters Ref. ZCH/1-45 and council manuscripts
