Khan Jahan Lodi (d.1631). Mughal, c.1620. Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807. Numbered 8 in Persian inventory note. Gouache with gold; on an album leaf with borders of gold arabesques and an outer margin of flowering plants in gold; reinforced at the edges with grey paper. 161 by 98 mm; page 377 by 243 mm. Reverse: a quatrain written diagonally in 'nasta'liq' calligraphy by 'Abdallah al-Husaini; 17th century. Khan Jahan stands on grass facing right, holding a decorated gold 'pan' box in both hands. He is dressed in a pink jama and spirally striped trousers; green background. Note: This portrait has been identified by comparison with two pictures in the Victoria and Albert Museum; I.S.312-1951, and I.S.9-1925 (Stchoukine (1929), pl.XXVII).
