Description (What the record is about)
-
This collection is the work of Henry William Taunt (1842 - 1922), who was an Oxford-based professional photographer.
The photographs were taken in Oxford, Oxfordshire and surrounding counties, with many views along the River Thames, mostly tourist views that Taunt could sell from his shops in Broad Street, and subsequently High Street, Oxford. He also recorded the society around him, in street views and fairs, mills and factories, and in portraits of the wealthy and the agricultural worker. The photography is of a consistently high quality throughout.
The collection provides an excellent record of late nineteenth and early twentieth century architecture, and town and rural life.
The NMR holds almost all known surviving Taunt glass plate negatives. Digital images from these and from original prints held by the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies form part of the Viewfinder database on the English Heritage website. Photographs with an HT prefix are not held by the National Monuments Record.
Further Taunt material is held by the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
