This collection consists of 2 main series - the minute books and the court rolls, both in book form. In general, the minute books appear to be the first rough draft taken down in court from which the official record in the court roll was afterwards entered. Admissions and surrenders in the later minute books are signed by the tenants concerned, but there are no signatures in the court roll.
The minute books survive from 1589, the court rolls in this collection only from 1710, but there is in the Record Office an earlier collection of court rolls of this manor in roll form purchased from Mr. H.R. Moulton in 1934 [MR/13] 1334-1601. The first two minute books [L2/10 and 11] marry up with these earlier court rolls between 1589 and 1601, which at this time contain only surrenders and admissions relating to copyhold, entered to be of record.
A bundle of family papers presented by Mr. Compton-Bracebridge in 1933 [MR/9] contains a number of court papers relating to this manor, of which the most important are schedules of pains and penalties, in the nature of byelaws, laid down by the jury at the Leet in the 17th and 18th centuries.
