1137. Margate No. 4, Albion (VD & VE). Dec. 1822, Jan., Jun. 1823, Jan. 1824, Apr. 1827, Mar. 1830, Sep. 1834. 22 items.
Two 40 horse power side lever boat engines, with 35½ inch cylinders, 3½ foot strokes. Power increased to 50 horses 1830.Cross-section of the boat and engines, side view of engine and boiler, plan of the engine room - reverse drawings made in the London office [?]; section and plan of boiler - partially coloured reverse drawing; section and plan of boiler - partially coloured original and partially coloured reverse drawings; 2 sketch plans of boiler, one marked "this boiler to be adopted"; copy of section of the boat 18 feet abaft of the centre of gravity, from William Evans; sketch of paddle wheel and shaft; 2 sketch plans on 1 sheet of the engines and boiler; sketch of paddle wheel and shaft sent to the Foundry; paddle wheel bolts; sketch plan of boiler marked "as made".
Also the following later items: section and plan of boiler as altered, Jan. 1824 - 2 partially coloured drawings; longitudinal section of boiler, plan of the top showing the required situation of steam box and manholes, cross-section, plan - partially coloured reverse drawings made in the London office, Apr. 1827; new 39½ inch cylinder, slide valves, case etc., Mar. 1830 (also used for the Dragon); sections and plans of boiler for 2 50 horse engines - partially coloured original and reverse drawings, Sep. 1834. Several of these drawings bear letter codes.Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 756. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 314.
For the United Margate Steam Packet Co. According to Boat Engine Book No. 1, the engines were ordered by the Albion Steam Boat Co., but correspondence in the firm's letter books makes it clear that the boat was operated by the United Margate Steam Packet Co. The firm was later referred to as the Margate Steam Packet Co.
