Indian Workers Association 50th Anniversary celebrations

Correspondence; press cuttings; and associated papers relating to celebrations organised by both Indian Workers Associations (GB) to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of the organisation in Coventry in 1938. The file also includes a copy of a speech by Bill Morris, deputy General Secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union [TGWU] to the Indian Workers Association's 50th Anniversary celebrations 2 April 1989

Correspondence includes copy letters from members of the Indian Workers Association (GB) led by Avtar Jouhl to members of the Indian Workers Association (GB) led by Prem Singh, discussing the decision of Prem Singh's organisation not to take part in joint celebrations. There are also copy letters to the Indian Workers Association (Southall) inviting representatives to preliminary meetings to plan anniversary celebrations, and a copy letter from Avtar Jouhl to the Barrow Cadbury Fund Ltd applying for a grant towards the cost of anniversary activities.

The file also contains minutes of a consultative meeting held at Leamington Spa with representatives from various local branches of the Indian Workers Association (GB) led by Avtar Jouhl to discuss regional and national anniversary events, including a rally in Southall 1-2 October 1988

Also included are letters from the Indian Peoples Association in North America and the Korea Friendship Committee conveying greetings and messages of support to the Indian Workers Association on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of its founding

Press cuttings consist of articles in 'India Abroad' and 'Third World Impact' on the anniversary celebrations, and an advertisement printed in 'Punjabi Darpan' for a rally organised by the Indian Workers Association (GB) led by Avtar Jouhl which took place at the Dominion Centre, Southall 1-2 October 1988. The article in 'Third World Impact' was written by Prem Singh and contains a brief history of the Indian Workers Association. There is also an article published in 'Asian Times' on the presentation of a Hansib Community Award to Avtar Sadiq on behalf of the Indian Workers Association

Papers in Punjabi include correspondence, newspaper articles, a handwritten version of a speech made by Avtar Jouhl in Nottingham at anniversary celebrations, and a handwritten report by Gurmel Singh, Central Executive Committee about the Golden Jubilee celebrations in Southall 9 July 1988

Finally, the file contains a copy of a pamphlet on the history and achievements of the Indian Workers Association produced for the 50th anniversary by the section of the organisation that split from the Indian Workers Association led by Prem Singh in 1983, and was led by Naranjan Singh Noor.
