The boundaries of the city of Chester were first defined in the charter of Edward, the Black Prince, in 1354. These boundaries remained unaltered until 1835 when a small area in Boughton was added to the city and in 1898 the boundaries of the city were slightly altered at Blacon and defined in relation to the area around Chester castle. The Corporation first tried to enlarge the city boundaries in 1898-9 but was unsuccessful and the first substantial extension of the city boundary took place in 1936 under the County of Chester Review Order, when land in Blacon, Claverton, Little Saughall, Marlston cum Lache and Newton by Chester were transferred from Chester Rural District and land in Hoole from Hoole Urban District. In 1954 under the Chester Extension Order of 1953 Hoole Urban District Council was abolished and the greater part of this area was added to the city. Further extensions Commission under the Local Government Act of 1958, but before this took place a new Royal Commission on Local Government was established in 1966 under the chairmanship of Sir John Maud and under the resulting Local Government Act of 1972 on 1 April 1974 Chester Corporation together with Chester Rural District and Tarvin Rural District will be amalgamated to form a non-metropolitan county district of the new non metropolitan county of Cheshire
