Private Copy Press Letter Book

Private Letter Book. 1782-1789.

This volume is entitled on the spine, 'Private Letter Book. J Watt. May 1782 to Apl. 1789'
It has a hard cover. It contains two hundred and eighty seven folios with five hundred and one letters from James Watt, all of which are copy-press and have been pasted into the volume in chronological order.
The folios were numbered. The folio numbering jumps from f.112 to f.118.
There is a separate index of two pages, written by Watt. The index pages which form part of the bound volume have not been used.
The first letter in the volume is pasted on the verso of the last index folio.
Of the copy-press letters pasted in the volume, are all in Watt's hand, except two, nos. 399 and 401 below, one of which is, the other may be, by James Watt jr. There is one loose printed page and there are thirty-six loose copy press letters. All of the letters were written from Birmingham.
The letter from Watt to Mr Cochrane of 1 Sep. 1782 [no. 11 below] acknowledges the news of his father's death.
