Administrative / biographical background

The area of which the drainage was directed to the River Adur was listed in Part I of the First Schedule to the Land Drainage Act, 1930, and was therefore designated a Catchment Area for the purposes of the Act. A Board was constituted for the Catchment Area on 3 November 1930 by the River Adur Catchment Board Constitution Order, 1930 [Statutory Rules and Orders, 1930, No. 881, made by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries under s. 3 of the Land Drainage Act, 1930 (20 and 21 George V, c. 44)]

The rights and obligations of the Commissioners of Sewers for the Rape of Bramber and the Trustees of the River Adur Navigation over the 'main river' were transferred to the Catchment Board on 23 January 1932 by the River Adur Catchment Board Transfer Order, 1932 [S. R. & O., 1932, No. 52, made by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries under s. 4(1)(a) of the Land Drainage Act, 1930 (20 and 21 George V, c. 44)] The powers and duties of the River Adur Drainage Board were transferred to the Catchment Board on 30 September 1933 by the River Adur Catchment Board (Transfer of Powers of the River Adur Drainage Board) Order, 1933 [Made by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries under s. 11 of the Land Drainage Act, 1930 (20 and 21 George V, c. 44)]; however, the administration, and therefore the records, of the Drainage Board remained distinct from those of the Catchment Board

The Catchment Board was dissolved on 1 October 1950, its functions passing to the West Sussex River Board by the West Sussex River Board Constitution Order, 1950 [Statutory Instruments, 1950, No. 974, made by the Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries, and Health, under s. 1 of the River Boards Act, 1948 (11 and 12 George VI, c. 32)]
