Records of West Sussex Record Office Additional Manuscripts

INTRODUCTION

This is the thirty third volume of Additional Manuscripts (Add Mss) to have been catalogued in the West Sussex Record Office and it has been compiled, in general, along the lines indicated in the first volume in November 1956

The class of Additional Manuscripts embraces all the smaller gifts and deposits of documents received by the County Record Office, as distinct from the large family and estate collections, such as the Goodwood Mss., or accumulations from solicitors' offices, such as the Oglethorpe and Anderson Mss.; or collections of official bodies, such as Quarter Sessions Records, each of which is referred to and quoted by name. The majority of such documents have been deeds of title, though increasingly a healthy balance of a vast range of other original material has been catalogued in these volumes. However, the pressure of the weight of material to be catalogued has meant that since volume twenty nine in March 1983, the catalogues of title deeds, instead of being the detailed calendars that had been the practice until then, have appeared in summary lists, with the emphasis being placed on the property concerned in the transaction, rather than on the parties involved, and the technicalities of the type of legal conveyance being used

This catalogue lists a number of small deposits, mostly concerning deeds of title, but it also includes the records of the Lucas Family and the Warnham Court Estate in Horsham and Warnham, 1609-1967 (Add Mss 31,741-32,666) These documents are listed in a separate catalogue on AZA as 'Lucas of Warnham Court', under the 'From Landlord to Labourer' project. There are records of a number of local organizations, such as the Ford Flying Resistance Group, 1971-1984 (Add Mss 31,576); the Mid-Sussex Ploughing and Agricultural Society, 1920-1967 (Add Mss 31,585-31,592); the Crawley and District Community Association, 1944-1963 (Add Mss 31,702-31,727) and the Bognor Regis Amnesty Group, 1978-1984 (Add Mss 32,867-32,868). Sporting records include the Minute Book of Chichester Priory Park Cricket Club, 1887-1899 (Add Mss 32,871). The documents range in date from a deed of gift of property in Madehurst, 1336 (Add Mss 32,832), to the transcript of an interview with playwright R.H. Bowden of Lavant, 1985 (Add Mss 34,869)

No index has been provided for this volume, as all the relevant details of this and all previous volumes have been included in the card indexes of persons, places, manors and subjects, which are to be found in the Search Room of the West Sussex Record Office
