Arrangement (Information about the filing sequence or logical order of the record)
-
These records were in the custody of the late Mr. Peter Price who served as Secretary both to the Design Group and the Civic Trust. In 1985 he was appointed as the Trust's 'archivist'. This accumulation therefore consists both of Mr. Price's own records and those of other officers in the organisations. The individual creators of the records (other than Mr. Price) have been identified where this can be done with confidence.
The records as received did not appear to have been arranged according to any rigid scheme; some bundles or files relate only to one subject, others to many, and there is a degree of duplication of material within and between bundles (this has, however, been reduced by weeding). A classification scheme has therefore been devised within which the original bundles or files and other items have been placed in chronological order.

The Gloucester Civic Design Group was formed in 1957 to promote higher standards of planning and architectural design in the city. Its executive committee consisted mainly of specialists in these fields, but it also had a wider lay membership. From 1969, at the request of the Corporation, it provided a panel (known as the Planning Appraisal Committee) to make regular comments to the city planning officer on local development proposals. This role was later performed by the Trust [see D6224/2/1/2].
Following preliminary meetings organised by the Design Group towards the end of 1971, the Gloucester Civic Trust Ltd. was formally established in 1972 as a fully-fledged local amenity society with wider terms of reference than those of the Design Group, which remained as a separate body until November 1973, when it was dissolved and its functions, assets and records were passed to the Civic Trust.
The Gloucestershire Federation of Amenity Societies was formed in 1975 to promote and encourage the work of amenity societies in the county and to make representations to planning authorities. Its members were:
The Cheltenham Society
Gloucester Civic Trust
Cotswold District F.A.S.
Federation of Stroud District Amenity Societies
Tewkesbury District F.A.S.
The Federation was closely involved in the consultations on the Gloucestershire County Council Structure Plan [see D6224/3/2/4, 3/2/6-8], but in 1981 it went into 'hibernation' until another environmental issue affecting the county as a whole should arise. Its records were placed in the custody of Gloucester Civic Trust [see D6224/3/2/6].
