The property was formerly copyhold of the Manor of Brighton and was enfranchised on 17 & 18 Jan 1798. The bundle includes a plan of proposed alterations to 33 St James's Street for Messrs Dollond and Aitchison in 1958 (AMS6153/10/36). In 1798 the site was described as -
Piece of land (4 pauls) in Upper Furlong, Little Laine, formerly Humphry Paine (W: 4 pauls of Richard Lemon Wichelo and formerly Benjamin Master, E: partly to 2 pauls of Charles Scrase Dickins and formerly Thomas Scutt and partly to 2 pauls of John Ackerson and formerly Thomas Grinstead)
In 1885 the property was described as -
Piece of land (E-W (N) 25' 3" (S) 24' 6", N-S 117' 4") with messuages and shops 33 St James Street and 1-4 Cavendish Street
