Hunter Archaeological Society records. Records of the Society and a collection of miscellaneous letters, lectures, drawings, photographic plates given by members of the society and others. The largest part of the collection concerns the Gatty family. (Housed in the Library for some years and eventually deposited 1969). Including:
Society records: Minutes 1911-1949, membership books 1912-1962, cash-books 1921-1951, letters and circulars (mainly addressed to R.E. Leader) 1912-1916, design for president's badge, reports on Society lectures
Joseph Hunter: Letters from Hunter to John Read (53), Mr. Robinson (13) and several other persons 1814-1856; Manuscript notebook of Hunter's containing additions to his "Agincourt"; Gatty correspondence:
Gatty correspondence and diaries of Mrs. Margaret Gatty (d.1873), of Rev. Alfred Gatty of Ecclesfield vicarage, and of her daughter Mrs. Juliana H. Ewing (d.1885), writer of children's books. A large collection. Deposited 1969; Margaret Gatty: Letters from her to members of her family c1830-1871; to various correspondents about her writing and her studies of seaweeds, include a number to Dr. W. H. Harvey, an authority on algae 1844-1869; Diaries: Annually 1845-1869, except 1861 (entries slight); Drawings and sketches: A few illustrations of specimens; a volume containing sketches some by Mrs. Gatty, but mainly by her daughter Margaret (includes local places); Juliana H. Ewing: Letters from her to her husband and to her family, including a series from Fredericton; Canada 1867-1869; correspondence with Randolph Caldecott, illustrator of her books (many of his letters adorned with black and white sketches) 1879-1885; miscellaneous correspondence 1860-1885; Diaries: Annually 1856-1883, except 1868 and 1874 (very full entries for some years)
Wigfull Papers: J.R. Wigfull, Sheffield architect, was an active member of the Society. Letters to Wigfull on a variety of local architectural, historical and heraldic matters c1913-1936 (from S.O. Addy, R.E. Leader and others); Notes by Wigfull on local old buildings, correspondence with Society for Preservation of Ancient Buildings; Photographs of local buildings of historical interest and photographic plates of excavations at Beauchief Abbey; Materials for Wigfull's guide to Sheffield Cathedral
Miscellaneous: Drawings of old buildings; manuscript lectures by R. E. Leader, John Austen, Thomas Winder and others; papers relating to A. Leslie Armstrong and Dr Arthur Court.
