Administrative / biographical background

Lodge of Charity was granted a warrant by the Antients' Grand Lodge to meet as No. 306(B)on 27 December 1799. The Antients' Warrant No. 306, originally granted to members meeting at Plymouth Dock on 7 September 1797, was purchased by a group of Brothers from the Royal Invalids' Corps. In 1799 the Lodge met at the Welcome Home Sailor, Plymouth Dock [now Devonport], Devon. In 1800 the Lodge left Devonport and moved to Plymouth, Devon, meeting at the Fountain Tavern, Grand Parade, Plymouth. The Lodge relocated to meet at various inns and taverns in the Plymouth area. In 1801 the Lodge was named as the Royal Invalids' Lodge and in 1809 it was renamed as Lodge of Charity. In 1813 the Antients' Grand Lodge formed a union with the Moderns' Grand Lodge to become known as the United Grand Lodge of England. The Lodge met as No. 389 from 1814, as No. 270 from 1832 and then No. 223 from 1863, a number it continues to use today. The Lodge now meets at St. Aubyn Masonic Hall, Devonport Road, Plymouth. The Lodge dating from 1799 to the present day is marked in Lane's 'Masonic Records' as a separate lodge from the Lodge issued the warrant originally in 1797, the two periods are counted as the same lodge. In consequence, the United Grand Lodge of England granted the Lodge of Charity its bi-centenary warrant in 1997.
