Description (What the record is about)
-
Like so much else in the deposit the maps and surveys are less than satisfactory; there is nothing here to compare with the splendid, near complete, late 18th century estate surveys in the Jerome/Worsley of Appuldurcombe documents or the Oglander deposit. As listed here the maps and surveys are made up of a mixture of individual items and bundles. The order of sub-class arrangement is; general surveys, Limerick estate, Wicklow estate, Waterford estate, Isle of Wight estate, individual Isle of Wight properties, manor of Ossemsley. The sub-classes are separated from each other in the text by rows of stars.
The most useful item is probably the field book with maps of 1840, JER/HBY/176/3, which describes the Isle of Wight estate at its greatest extent and includes several properties unrepresented by series of title deeds. There are interesting maps of Alverstone in Brading, 1773, JER/HBY/179/1 and of Westover, c. 1814, JER/HBY/182/2. A general survey of the estate was made for Henry Worsley in 1804 but only the book of reference, JER/HBY/182/2, now remains. There is a brief manorial survey of Thorley taken in 1680, revised in 1693 and again in 1705, JER/HBY/177/3.
