Moss Side was the fourth area designated for housing development and was planned as a self contained village, 1½ miles to the west of Leyland town centre. Approval was granted on 27 March 1975. The main series of records listed in this section relate to sites B and C which were rented housing schemes. There was also a private housing programme but no records of this have been selected for preservation. Plans for a rented housing scheme on site D are listed as NTC 19/2/26-34 but no files relating to this scheme have been selected for preservation.
Delays on sites B and C caused disagreements between the CLDC and the respective contractors, Middleton and Company, and Henry Boot, which became the subject of arbitration proceedings. See: NTC 19/1/22-42 and 77-88.
Further developments were planned at Moss Side within the curve in the boundary of the designated area to the west of Leyland and virtually surrounding the first development at Moss Side. Most of this new area was designated for employment use with a few small parcels in the southern part of the site as completion of the residential area. (See: NTC 19/1/90,91). A test track for British Leyland was built on this site. (See: NTC 19/1/92-97).
In 1979/80 the CLDC purchased British Leyland's obsolete north and south factories. The north factory was retained by Leyland until 1981-2 but plans went ahead for the redevelopment of the south Factory. (See: NTC 19/1/98-105).
