2nd Lt William Turner Richardson killed with 'B' Battery 108 (confirmed) Coy MGC 1/7/16
Born Dublin 8/2/82. Nok Mr Richardson of St Dolaughs, Raheny, Co Dublin. His casualty form states 12 RIR attd 108 MGC. Posted for duty with 108 MGC 26/1/16. kia 1/7/16. He was commissioned in the Regular Army. His commission application dated 14/3/15 states that he was unmarried, he was Irish by birth, address as above. He previously served in the Irish Rugby? Vol Corps Aug-Sept gazetted 2nd Lt Dublin Schools Cadet Corps Oct 1914. Promoted Lt 22/1/15 having actewd as Adjt of Corps since Oct. He had previously applied for a commission through Caernarvon Territorial Forces Association recommended by OC 2/6 RWF (not yet gazetted). Educated at Rathmines Municipal School of Commerce in Dublin. An informant report by J Irvine No 17926 formerly 108 Brigade 'A' Battery now 11 Irish Rifles 'B' Coy. 'Sgt G Bradley of the same Brigade and Battery will I think be able to give you information as to how the Lt was killed.' Pte Lawson No 17755 RIR who was in St Marks Hospital VAD 26/8/16, Enfield, home address High St, Portaferry Co Down. 'Informant states that on 1/7/16 at Thiepval Lt WT Richardson was killed. He was told this by Lt Richardson's gunners on 2/7/16 when he came out of the trenches. The Lt formerly belonged to 12 RIR and was transferred to the MGC'. Pte M Rankin No 17736 108 Brigade MGC B Battery Who was in No 20 General Hospital, Etaples 25/9/16. 'Pte John Cameron 108 Brigade 'B' Battery servant to Lt Richardson would know about him. He was just running beside him at the time - it was at Thiepval on 1/7/16 to the left of the village going from Thiepval Wood. He was saying 'Come On Boys when he dropped and lay where he fell saying 'Carry On'. He was hit through the helmet going in a stooping position. We had to go back to our trenches. Search parties went out. Cameron whose number is 177?? Is a servant to another man now'. Gunner Ramsbottom No 15909 108 Brigade MGC who was in No 39 General Hospital. 'I was told by Gunner Rankin of 108 Brigade when I was at the Base Camp at Camiers last month that Lt Richardson was killed in the Somme Valley. He gave me no details at all. Gunner Rankin is at the Base at Camiers and I think that he is likely to be there for another fortnight.' His sister was Margaret Richardson A/Matron on the HS Dieppe, brother Thomas Richardson, mother Mary Richardson. He left £379 6s 10d. The Captain of the RWF tried to get him transferred to 2/6 RWF. His TF application for the 6 RWF dated 22/1/15 states height 5' 11", educated at St Andrews School Dublin, occupation railway official.
