Letter from OIC Empire Hospital for Officers, Vincent Square, Westminster, dated 24/6/1918 - to War Office "Sir, some time ago I wrote to you about the question of Lt P Young, Middx Regt, a patient in this hospital. This officer was wounded in the neck and is paralysed throughout the entire body in all the limbs. I urgently requested you to consider his application for a wound gratuity. Seeing the nature of his disabilities are due to wounds received on the field of battle, it would appear that he is at least entitled to £500 wound gratuity. This hospital is for parlysed officers and so far our experience has until recently been that cases of paralysis of this description have received adequate wound gartuities at the rate of about £250 for each useless limb/ For some reason or other, just recently, we have had great difficulty in obtaining a propoer reward in these cases. Lt Young received this morning a note to say that he was being granted 1/6d per day by Messrs Cox. There is no word of a lump sum gratuity. This matter is of great importance. I am sure that people would notlike to know that paralysed officers were being in any way shabbily treated, but as we are in charge of these officers we shall feel it our duty to take this matter before the highest authorities unless we can get proper answerrs to our letters dealing with these subjects and due consideration to the nature of the cases we write about. Last year the awards were reasonable and fair but this year there has been great difficulty in obtaining proper consideration of these paralysed cases. I am, Sir, yr ob serv George Riddoch, Capt RAMC"
Reply 29/6/1918 "In reply to your letter of 24 June I am directed to acquaint you that Lt P Young was awarded a wound gratuity of £250 on 20 June. His case will be further considered in October. The question of retired pay is being dealt with by the Min of Pensions and Lt Young will be advised in due course. JG Ashley for Asst Fin Sec"
Letter from War Office 22/8/1918 to GOC London Dist, Horse Guards SW1 "Sir, I am commanded by the Army Council to forward you the enclosed copy of a letter received from Capt G Riddock (sic) RAMC Commanding Empire Hospital and to say that the tone of the letter containing as it does veiled threats and references to what the writer considers is due to himself, is not that which should be adopted by an officer when addressing a Dept of the War Office and Capt Riddock should be so informed and directed not to repeat the practice. Signed BB Cubitt"
Medical report 11/4/1918: struck by piece of shell which caused wound of the spinal column at the head of the 5th CV in the middle line and lodged. It was not considered adviseable to operate. There is total paralysis of the trunk, legs and right arm and partial paralysis of the left arm. Owing to paralysis of the intercostal muscles, beathing is purely diaphragmic. The wound is still discharging and he is gravely ill.
