This list, made in 1963 at the Dorset Record Office, does not pretend to the full status of an accurate catalogue. The original intention of the compilers was to divide the mass of material into rough classes, and to give outside dates to each class. In fact a great deal more than this has been done. As hardly an original file remained intact, partly through the work of a previous would-be arranger, (who endorsed many documents with their dates in purple pencil), thousands of papers which were either found loose or as bundled by this arranger had to be sorted out. Even so, there are certain bundles such as the Bills series which have been taken on trust and left largely unexamined. The papers which have been put into a "Quarter Sessions Rolls" series have been placed in date order of years, but are not in order within each year. It is quite possible that the searcher will find strays that should be in other classes. In spite of the roughness of this catalogue, it is felt that it will serve as a useful guide to a large and fascinating accumulation of archives for which previously no catalogue existed.
The County Archivist wishes to thank Mrs S M Campbell, MA, who bore the brunt of the work, and Miss M Weinstock, MA, who sorted out the deeds.
