Administrative / biographical background

As part of its efforts to extend trade southwards on the Coromandel coast, the Company opened negotiations with the Khan of Gingee in 1682 to settle at Cuddalore and Porto Novo, towns lying about 100 miles south of Madras. Permission to establish factories was granted and trade increased rapidly. Owing to increasing hostilities in the area, the factors transferred to the nearby factory at Conimere in 1688.
