The founder of the Brand family was Thomas Brand of Great Hormead, yeoman, who was born in 1557. The fifth generation produced Thomas III (1673-1718) who married Margaret Nichol who in her widowhood bought the Hoo estate, St Pauls Walden, from Sir Gilbert Keate in trust for her son Thomas IV. Thomas IV married Lady Caroline Pierrepoint, daughter of Evelyn Duke of Kingston, and died in 1770. Thomas V, son of Thomas IV, married Gertrude Roper who succeeded at the death of her brother Francis to the barony of Dacre. Their eldest son, Thomas VI, became the twentieth Lord Dacre on his mother's death. Thomas VI died without issue in 1851 and was succeeded by his brother Henry Otway Brand who took the surname Trevor. The title passed first to his eldest surviving son, Thomas Crosbie William (Trevor), and then to the latter's brother, Henry Bouverie William (Brand) who ended a distinguished career in politics with a period as Speaker from 1872-1884. On his retirement he was created first Viscount Hampden of Glynde, succeeding to the barony of Dacre in 1890
