Stroud General Hospital may originate from a dispensary founded in 1750. The early history is somewhat confused, but a hospital is mentioned in George Street in 1790, and otherwise not until new buildings were erected in Bedford Street for the dispensary in 1835. The present hospital was opened in 1875 and extended in 1890 and 1919. It was taken over by the National Health Service in 1948, and is still in use [1980]. A short history of the hospital was compiled in 1975 (PA 320/11).
